Why should I volunteer?

Hall of Fame Inductee

From the time Matthew Amis was a young child he expressed a desire to help others, and, now, as an adult, he’s put that desire into action many times over. Since 2004, he has served as a Concierge at San Rafael City Hall, volunteering several days and many hours welcoming visitors and answering their questions. “Always dependable, reliable, enthusiastic and willing to take on extra tasks, Matthew has been a real asset to our Concierge program,” claims Cory Bytof, Volunteer Program Coordinator.

While volunteering for the City of San Rafael, Matthew also donates four hours of his time each Friday at the 5th Avenue Health Care Center where he has been a paid week-end Activities Assistant for several years. Because of his work at 5th Avenue, he was able to get certification from the College of Marin which allows him to work with frail and older adults in a variety of settings, directing groups and one-on-one programs. In addition to working with the elderly, Matthew has also volunteered with the Marin Interfaith Youth Outreach Teen Center where he supervised teen activities and acted as their spokesperson at various community events.
And since 1997, he has been a volunteer crew member for TV Channel 26, helping producers and guests with broadcast tapings, as well as, in the past, working the phones during KQED fund raising events.

Matthew Amis, a City of San Rafael volunteer extraordinaire, epitomizes the quote by Helen Steiner Rice: “In this troubled world, it’s refreshing to find someone who still has the time to be kind… who still has the faith to believe that the more you give, the more you receive, and who’s ready by thought, word or deed to reach out a hand in an hour of need.”
